CPE started in 2015 under the leadership of Rev. Rod Seeger and, eventually, his student, Rev. Silvia Tiznado. In November 2017, ACPE accredited SFNM's CPE Center.

Rev. Valerie McEntee was the fifth and last person to occupy the role of The Night Minister. She was also the first woman to lead the organization in this role.
Rev. Daniel Borysewicz was one of several "Sacred Space" ministers over the years. Faithful&Fabulous, led by John Brett, is our LGBTQ+ outreach program and one of the many Community Programs we are cultivating, including Open Shabbat and Meditation Group.

Rev. Valerie McEntee and Rev. Trent Thornley attended this annual event. Night Ministry cultivates relationships with various queer philanthropic organizations.
Open Cathedral Usher, David Chew, and Open Cathedral Deacon, Rev. Nancy Pennekamp, prepare for an outdoor Advent celebration.
Rev. Monique Ortiz facilitates the 2018 Vigil. We continue to partner with several organizations, including the SF Interfaith Council and Faithful Fools, to host this event on the Winter's Solstice remembering people who died on the streets.
In 2021, the Governing Board formally reorganized San Francisco Night Ministry. The historic position of The Night Minister was phased out in favor of a more recognizable non-profit structure, including an executive director and program directors overseeing each area of ministry. Night Ministry also began expanding its volunteer opportunities to bring more people -- of diverse backgrounds and spiritual traditions -- into the work we do.
In January 2022, Rev. Johnny Leggett became our first Director of Night Ministry Services. In this inaugural position, Rev. Johnny started leading our team of night ministers on our nightly walks of the city streets. Going forward the Night Ministers are operating as a team, rather than the ministry night walks essentially focusing on the one person of The Night Minister.
Rev. Johnny passed away in March 2024. He is remembered fondly at SFNM. Johnny was succeeded in this role by Buddhist Chaplain Shelly Webb.
In 2020, Kylie Svenson became the first Care Line Director (pictured left). Kylie then transitioned to becoming our first Clinical Director.
The pandemic forced changes in how we operate our phone line. New technologies allowed volunteers to start working from home, while remaining in community. Pictured above is CLC Deborah White on Zoom with other CLCs.
KA Nelson became our first Director of Volunteer Experience. KA was instrumental in building the Care Line.
In this video, KA shares about her love of the Care Line volunteers and our nightly service to callers

SFNM's CPE program was founded in 2014 by Rev. Rod Seeger, with the support of Night Minister Lyle Beckman and Board Chair Mary Von Zomeren. In 2017, the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education fully accredited the progam -- then a satellite of Standford Health -- to operate independently. In May 2024, the CPE program celebrated it's 10th anniversary!
