2024 SPORT

We have had some information through about some of the sports that will be on offer in term 1 next year. This is an early heads up that the information and registrations will be on Kindo BEFORE school starts. We will send out updates via Hero towards the end of January. Please look out for these. At this stage we will be offering:

·         Volleyball for year 5 - 8, Tuesdays at Kilbirnie Rec Centre

·         Futsal for years 1 - 8, Fridays at Ākau Tangi (registration fee covered by the Up Foundation)

·         Touch Rugby for years 1 - 8, Wednesdays at Wakefield Park

There may be other sports on offer, but we haven't had the information through yet.

TOUCH JAM FESTIVAL

Well done to our year 7/8 team of Alfie D, Dan N, Elijah S, Jacob P, Lucan S, Matthew S and Zane H who participated in this annual event over the weekend. They had a great time and presented SFDS with pride. A huge thank you to Frana P who was coach and manager on the day.

CHEERLEADING

Congratulations to Harper M and Rose M and their Empire and Allegiant Cheerleading teams who both came third in the Cheerleading Nationals over the weekend. A great achievement. well done girls!

INTER ZONE ATHLETICS

SOUTHERN ZONE ATHLETICS

A friendly reminder of the details:

Date: Thursday 2 November (postponement - Thursday 9 November). If it is postponed, we will post on Hero as soon as we know.

Location: Newtown Park

Our school is in charge of running the vortex - please email Sarah on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz if you are able to help with this for all or part of the day.

All students attending need to be dropped straight to Newtown Park. We will have staff there from 8.45am.

We will have a bus going back to school at 2.45pm.

Your child may go to school before and/or after their events - please remind them to sign in/out of the school office, and to also check in/out with Sarah at the park.

If your child/ren has your permission to walk home at 2.45pm, please email Sarah on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz

Wear school PE gear and bring packed morning tea, lunch and water bottle.

The forecast for Friday looks much better than the weather yesterday. We are really looking forward to a great day at Newtown Park. A couple of our helpers from Tuesday are unable to help on Friday. We have four year 7/8 teams attending the year 7/8 festival tomorrow - thank you to the parents who are coming along so we can give the kids this great opportunity.

THE ANNUAL WELLINGTON AND KAPI MANA PRIMARY AND INTERMEDIATE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The girls tournament is on Tuesday 19 September (back up date Friday 22 September), starting at 8.30am.

The boys tournament is on Wednesday 20 September (back up date Thursday 21 September), starting at 8.30am.

Both tournaments are being held at the Renouf Tennis Centre, 60 Brooklyn Road, Brooklyn.

There is an open grade for year 7/8 students and a year 6 and under grade for all other year groups. The draw will be posted at the venue on the morning of the tournament.

Players entered must have played tennis before and have knowledge of the rules of tennis and how to score. Players must also bring their own tennis racquet for the event and wear our school PE uniform.

Finalists and semi-finalists of each grade will qualify for the Tennis Central Regional Finals to be held in Palmerston North on 16 November.

The school won't be sending any staff to these tournaments. This means you will need to transport your child to and from the venue (or you could share transport with others) and also help supervise the SFDS players during the day - we probably only need one adult there at a time. Please do not enter your child in the tournament if you are unable to help. I will send a list of those attending once I have the confirmed list so you can organise to share transport if you'd like.

If you would like me to register your child, please let me know via return email on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz by Friday 1 September at 3pm. Suzanne will then add the $20 entry fee to your Kindo account. Payment will be required by Tuesday 5 September at 3pm. If we don't receive payment in time, then I won't be able to enter your child.

FLOORBALL

Please see the information below regarding Floorball training opportunities.

The junior floorball trainings started at Akau Tangi Sports Centre last week.

Our weekly training times are:

Years 1-6: Tuesdays, 4-5pm

Years 7/8: Tuesdays, 5-6pm

These are the perfect opportunity for your students to get prepared for term 4 when the floorball school leagues will be back on.

Also we have a girls only session (years 1-6) set up this coming Sunday, 23 July, 2-3pm. Sophie, our wonderful former national player and junior coach will be running this one.

SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS

Year 4 - 8 had a great time at this event yesterday. It was great to see the kids having fun in the water participating in both fun and competitive races. A huge thank you to the parents who helped to make the event run smoothly - Jayne M, Cat K, Rachael S, Robin M, Andrew M, Georgina C, Deb J.

For the Southern Zone qualifying races, the first 2 swimmers in each event and the first 4 swimmers in the 25m freestyle will go on to compete in the Southern Zone Swimming which is being held on Tuesday 22 August back at Kilbirnie Pool. Those swimmers who have qualified will receive further information.

REMINDER YEAR 4 - 8 SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS

This event will be held on Tuesday 18 July (first Tuesday back after the school holidays) at the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre. There will be an opportunity for all students to get in the water. They will have the choice of trying to qualify for the Southern Zone Swimming Sports by swimming in races, or participating in fun swimming activities. YEAR 5/6 MINIBALL AND YEAR 7/8 BASKETBALL

We have space in both of these teams for next term. Please sign your child/ren up on Kindo if they are keen to play. All information is on Kindo. A reminder that the registration fee is free next term due to the funding from Up Foundation.

CONGRATULATIONS Nadal and her HipHop Crew: Nova that have won the Nz HIpHopUnited Cadet Mega Crew Champions again this year (under a new dance name) and have qualified 2nd time to represent NZ for this at the World Champions in Portugal this year in October! Tumeke, e hoa mā!

SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

Thankfully the spots of rain this morning blew over and we had a dry morning for this event this morning. We are proud of the way the kids supported each other and did their best. 

A huge thank you to Robin M, Jo H and Megan T who came along and helped out as marshalls for the morning. We really appreciated your help and support!

The results will be in the newsletter next week.

The first 6 runners for boys and girls in each year group for years 4 - 8 qualify to run in the Southern Zone Cross Country which is being held on 16 May (postponement 18 May) at McAlister Park. Those runners will receive more information in the near future.

Check out our photos from this morning's cross country event. Thank you to our older buddies who supported the younger buddies to complete the event. It is wonderful that they have the opportunity to practice Tuakana-teina in this way!
