Designated School Officials (DSO) are here to help:
Provide guidance on maintaining F-1 immigration status while attending SFBC
Process F-1 immigration benefits
Navigate college policy and understand F-1 visa restrictions
Ensure college and student compliance with immigration policies
Provide educational tools, including workshops and tutorials
Note: Designated School Officials are not attorneys and are unable to provide legal assistance.
F-1 students should speak with their DSO if you are planning to do any of the following:
Change your major, program, or degree level
Change your education level
Transfer to a new school or take a leave of absence
Take a break from school
Travel outside the United States
Move to a new address
Request a program extension
While studying in the United States, it is important to maintain your F or M student status. Your status relates to the purpose, or reason for why you want to come to the United States. The U.S. Department of State issues you your visa based on your intended purpose.
Maintain valid passport (for you and your dependents)
Attend the school whose name appears on the current I-20
Register full-time (do not drop below full-time without advanced authorization by your DSO)
Maintain valid I-20
Obtain an I-20 travel signature from your DSO before you depart the U.S. (for you and your dependents)
Notify ISSD within 10 days of a change of address or telephone number
Do one of the following within 60 days after program completion:
Apply for OPT
Depart the U.S.
Transfer and obtain a new I-20 for a new school/program
Change to another immigration status
Work off-campus without authorization from your International Student Advisor
Work on-campus more than 20 hours per week while school is in session
Take leave of absence without authorization from your International Student Advisor
Drop below full-time without authorization from your International Student Advisor
Accept an I-20 signature or advice from anyone other than a DSO
