Current 7th graders interested in applying for NJHS should strive for good grades and seek opportunities to serve others, such as Student Council, scouting, volunteering, etc. 

 The application for current 7th graders will open on March 16th, 2026. Please understand the commitment to the SMS NJHS by reading the letter below.    You will find the link to the 7th-grade application at the bottom of this page on March 16, 2026. 

Dear Future Applicant and Parent/Guardian,

Thank you for your interest in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Being selected for NJHS is a prestigious honor that recognizes outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, and service. However, it is important to understand that membership in NJHS is much more than just holding a title — it is an ongoing commitment to serving others and making a positive impact within our school and local community.

Before applying, please carefully consider the responsibilities that come with NJHS membership. In order to remain in good standing, all members are expected to:

Monthly Meetings: Members are required to attend monthly NJHS meetings throughout the school year. These meetings are essential for planning service activities, discussing upcoming events, and collaborating with fellow members to carry out the work of the organization.

NJHS Events Participation: All members must participate in a minimum of two NJHS-sponsored events during the school year. These events may include school functions, service projects, fundraisers, or community outreach activities. Attendance and active involvement are critical to the success of our chapter’s work.

Maintaining Required Grades and Behavioral Expectations: In order to remain an active NJHS member, students must maintain the required academic grades as outlined in the NJHS criteria. This includes consistently demonstrating strong performance in all subjects. In addition, members must uphold behavioral expectations set forth by the school. This means having no behavioral referrals and consistently acting with respect and responsibility toward teachers, peers, and the community.

NJHS is about more than recognition — it is about responsibility.
Applicants should be prepared to dedicate time, energy, and effort toward service and leadership throughout the year. If you are accepted into NJHS, you are not only representing yourself but also our school and the values of this distinguished organization.

We encourage both students and families to reflect on these expectations before submitting an application. Joining NJHS is an incredible opportunity, but it requires dedication and follow-through.
