Students begin their visit at our facility with an introduction to the many career opportunities available in the Heavy Highway construction industry. We provide an overview of the different roles within our company and share a video that demonstrates the type of work our teams perform in the field.
Following the introduction, students divide into two groups to experience several hands-on activities.
One group tours our maintenance facilities, including our six-bay Heavy Equipment Maintenance Shop where large construction equipment is serviced and repaired. The tour also includes our on-highway fleet maintenance building, wash and paint area, and welding shop, where students can see real repair work currently underway. After the tour, students visit our Simulator Trailer to try operating equipment through our heavy equipment computer simulators, including the excavator module, as well as painting and BIG IDEAS simulators.
At the same time, the second group participates in a GPS surveying activity, using modern construction technology to locate hidden amulets while learning how GPS satellites and field equipment are used to guide today’s construction projects. Students then rotate through several pieces of actual heavy equipment—including a mini excavator, skid loader, mini loader, and articulated dump truck. Each station includes a simple task, giving students the chance to operate the equipment for approximately 3–5 minutes under supervision.
We appreciate the opportunity to introduce students to the construction industry and showcase the exciting career paths available in Heavy Highway construction.
