THE SAINTS 5 RULES OF U8-U9 COACHING
1) Keep players active. Use small groups and multiple areas so queues stay short.
2) Coach the decision as well as the technique: when to dribble, pass, turn or shoot.
3) Use questions such as “Where is the space?”, “Can you help your teammate?” and “What did you see?”
4) Allow mistakes. Players need chances to experiment, solve problems and try again.
5) Finish with football. Give players enough uninterrupted game time to apply what they learned.
How to use each session
Set up before players arrive where possible and begin with arrival football immediately.
Use the timings as a guide. A normal session is about 60 minutes.
Demonstrate quickly, then let the activity teach. Step in briefly when a clear coaching moment appears.
Use the easier/harder adaptations to suit Wallabies, Kangaroos, Eagles or mixed-ability groups without changing the weekly theme.
Try to keep games at 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 during training so every player is involved.
