THE SAINTS 5 RULES OF U5-U7 COACHING
1) Keep them moving. Avoid long lines and long explanations.
2) Give every child lots of touches. One ball per player is ideal for individual activities.
3) Show it quickly. A 20-second demonstration is usually better than a two-minute speech.
4) Praise effort, bravery, creativity and trying again — not only goals or the 'best' player.
5) Finish with football. Small-sided games are where children learn to make decisions.
How to use each session
Set up before players arrive where possible.
Start the arrival game immediately. Do not wait for every player to be present.
Use the suggested timings as a guide, not a rule. If the children love an activity and are learning, keep it going.
If an activity is not working, simplify it, change the space, or move on.
Use the 'Make it easier' and 'Make it harder' options to suit your group.
Recommended equipment
1 football per player
20–30 flat markers/cones
2 colours of bibs
2–4 mini goals where available
