No one expected that schools would suddenly close and parents, grandparents and guardians would suddenly become co-teachers for their children. Here are a few tips as we all navigate this new endeavor together:
The goal is to have your children emerge from this experience with a continued love for learning!
Remember that everyone is in the same boat. Your child will not be any further behind or ahead of another student.
Keep perspective. In the next 5, 10, or 15 years what story do you want your kids to tell about this experience?
Try to have a spirit of "we're all in this together. It's an adventure!"
If something isn't working, STOP and try something else. This is the time to experiment with different types of learning. You don't want your child to be frustrated.
Remember the goal is to keep up the momentum of learning, not to imitate school.
Have your children teach YOU what they know. You'll be surprised at the excitement they will have about teaching you new things. You'll be showing your child that learning is lifelong.
Set small goals for each day.
Make a small workspace for your child. Find a small corner, rearrange the furniture or clear away the clutter. Let this be an adventure for them.
Keep a routine, as much as possible. This means waking up at about the same time each day and keeping bed times in tact. Children thrive in structure!
Mental health and love of learning are more important than any given assignment.
There will be mess
There will be meltdowns and crying.
There will be anxiety.
There will also be joy!
Go outside as much as you can.
Read together.
Watch movies together.
Take a look at the Student Resources for a list of fun activities to do when you have down time.
Remember, this is not FOREVER.
We are in this together. We will get through this together !
