The Ilocos Region, officially known as Region I, is located in the northwestern part of Luzon, Philippines. Composed of four provinces—Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan—the region is home to a rich blend of cultural heritage shaped by history, geography, and the resilience of its people.

Ilocano culture is known for its simplicity, hard work, and strong sense of community. The people of this region take pride in their traditions, crafts, and deep-rooted values, which are evident in their daily lives, celebrations, and preserved heritage sites. With a mix of indigenous practices and centuries of Spanish influence, the Ilocos Region offers a unique cultural identity that continues to thrive today.

Language and People

The region is primarily inhabited by Ilocanos and Pangasinenses. Ilocano is the dominant language spoken in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union, while Pangasinense is widely spoken in the province of Pangasinan. These groups are known for being industrious, disciplined, and deeply respectful of family and tradition.

Beliefs and value

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Ilocanos practiced animism and believed in spirits called "anito," which could be either benevolent or malevolent, male or female. These anito governed all aspects of the universe. To appease the Mangmangkik before cutting down a tree, the following chant was recited: "Bari Bari. Dikat agunget pari. Ta pumukan kami. Iti pabakirda kadakami."

This chant calls on the Mangmangkik, asking them not to curse those cutting down the tree. Similar chants and phrases are also used to appease the Kaibáan when hot cooking water is disposed of in the yard.

The offerings, known as "atang," consisted of various food items, sweets, cigars, and paan. Atang is also offered to the deceased during prayers for the dead or on All Souls’ Day.

The region is predominantly Roman Catholic, and religious observances play a central role in community life. Major events like Simbang Gabi, Holy Week, and fiestas are celebrated with mass gatherings, processions, and traditional performances that blend faith and festivity.

The Ilocanos are known to be hardworking, determined, simple, and appreciative. However, they are also often labeled as stingy, or "kuripot" in their language. For them, being called stingy is more of a joke among Filipinos rather than a negative characterization. These traits are part of how the broader Filipino nationality has come to understand them.

The full-length skirt, known as PANDILING, has a cone shape and features a drawstring waist. It is crafted from hand-loomed textiles that have been meticulously woven and sewn by hand. The designs of these weaves draw inspiration from elements in nature, such as diamonds, the Milky Way, shells, and various stripes or checkered patterns. The skirt is worn over a full slip called a kamison.

On Sundays, a more elaborately designed dress is worn, accompanied by a colorful wrap-around called tapis, which features colors that complement the skirt's paneling. Everyday footwear consists of leather tsinelas, while more formal shoes, known as kutso, are made of beaded felt and leather and are typically reserved for Sundays and festivities.

Laoag City, February 10. Our Lady of Peace Pamulinawen is the name of a woman made popular in the classic Ilocano song title "Pamulinawen".

Pinili Town Fiesta and Agro-Industrial Fare is celebrated in honor of St. Isidore de Farmer. The Garlic Festival which is now a tourist attraction is observed because garlic is the main commodity of Pinili.
