Mr. Quiery
Mr. Quiery is the newest counselor at Junípero Serra High School. He has been helping his community through his efforts as a volunteer and mentor to many students and adults and families during hard times. He has grand views for most of the world's problems.
We interviewed Mr. Quiery at 8:15-9:05 at Junípero Serra High School about the injustice that homeless people face and what solutions and facts and the reason why they face injustice we could resonate to the public.
Why should people be aware of this injustice and put effort into trying to solve it?
It's important to have human empathy (Try to out yourself in their shoes). People cannot have assumptions on how they became homeless because a good number of them become homeless as a result of factors being out of their control (Mental health illness, psychosocial factors, financial issues.
What's the best way to make people aware of this injustice?
Most people are aware of the difficulties that Homeless people face but most choose not to act. The best way is to experience it in real life and as a result you might feel some guilt when you compare yourself with them. People need to leave their bubble and get emotions from seeing the conditions that homeless people face. Teaching people that maybe most of the homeless are hoping for change and never got the opportunities and treatments that others got that made them successful. People should be encouraged to see the homeless person's story before they classify them as crazy and lazy because they act like it because maybe they'll spark the person they were in a good condition.
What are some of the injustices the homeless face?
Neglect from people because of predetermined judgments (Stereotype).
Why does Society look down on homeless people?
Homeless people tend to act differently and in an uncomfortable manner. People think they have better other things to do than talk to mentally ill, smelly, dirty, drugged, drunk homeless person that is begging for communication and sympathy and care. We should understand the people's point of view of keeping up with their day schedule and if the homeless person is too far lost and incommunicable that nothing will get out of the conversation. However, if people had free time and the homeless man was drunk or drugged then we should escort them to a facility that will help him/her.
Should the Government (more taxes on people) or Businesses (Cause a culture change/revolution), or hard working people (Cause a culture change/revolution) take the initiative to help the homeless?
Everyone wants to help the homeless on every level.
What’s the best way to change our culture as a society?
Educate people to not have predetermined judgments. People need to be more social and get to know the homeless person and his/her story to be able to make a judgment on if they deserve the job or financial aid or shelter. Humans should have empathy: Put yourself in a homeless person's shoe. A government plan to change the culture is too big of governmental power. Little tasks/events people could do such as volunteering to feed the homeless once per year or month.
What’s the most effective and easy way for our Government to obtain and give resources to most of the homeless. Such as shelter, food, showers, hygiene goods, money, government job programs, health clinics, healthcare, therapists?
To outreach homeless people and educate them on federal programs that can help them. Congress and the president could also shift some of the tax dollars spent from one ineffective part of the spending bill to help give the deserving homeless people services.
What’s the main cause of people becoming homeless?
The younger population of homeless people are runaways. The younger population tend to runaway from something unsafe in their house. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness among women. Many people are homeless because they cannot afford rent. One in five homeless people suffers from untreated severe mental illness.
What types of people in society tend to become homeless?
Military Veterans suffering from PTSD and other disorders from combat. Drug addicts and alcoholics. The inability to sustain healthy living. No connections or privilege to get treatment for any hardships they faced in life.
How do we prevent more people becoming homeless?
To encourage people on the bordline of becoming homeless to ask for help. Church's and other institutions should check into suffering families that might become homeless and ask them what they need help with and work out a plan for them.
Should children be taken away from homeless parents? If so, should the parents lose custody and will they forever or until they are financially disabled or should the government put them in a foster care or adoption or child welfare program.
Government wants children to be raised by their parents. Child Protective Service (CPS) should step in if the parent(s) cannot provide the bare bone necessities for their children. CPS could get the family better support by temporarily putting the child in foster care and helping the parents out with any struggle they might have.
What does a homeless person have to do to get up on his feet and get financially stable? How hard is it?
Pretty hard because the homeless receive service ineffective for the long run. Services such as food stamps and homeless shelters will only help homeless people day by day and not enough to make a big enough leap. In order for something to grow it needs a healthy and stable environment. Finding a supportive network is monumental into helping people get out of homelessness because these challenges are too big to tackle on their own. Church's and institutions should be looked to but friends and family is the biggest support anyone could ask for.
It is shocking after talking to to Mr. Quiery, to notice how many people are out in the street with no place to live in while we seat in our place doing nothing. We need to let more people know about the life situation of the Homeless and this is what our website is made for. We asked many questions regarding homeless issue, more specifically about the discrimination against those who have lost their houses, and we receive very thoughtful answer from Mr. Quiery. I personally always thought that it's their own problem that homeless people do not go find a job, the truth is, some of them work really hard but it is our society that's holding them back from improving their life situation. We need to help those who have become homeless and the ones that are struggling to keep their houses. The interview was very successful, but if I were to do it again I would ask more question regarding the factors that cause discrimination, to get deeper into details. I truly want to thank Mr. Quiery for providing all the helpful information, and now it is time for every one of us to take action.
