Political cartoon about teachers (Cole)
If there is a lack of affordable housing then teachers struggle to live near where they work.
If teachers struggle to live near their school, they experience higher stress, fatigue, and job dissatisfaction
If teachers experience higher stress, fatigue, and job dissatisfaction than students receive a worse education.
Students receiving a worse education are wrong.
Therefore a lack of affordable housing is wrong.
Affordable housing is constantly discussed as a growing crisis in California. The state’s high housing costs, especially in cities like San Francisco, have resulted in rising homelessness, economic inequality and placed many lower and middle income families in difficult situations. One group that is disproportionately affected by the lack of affordable housing are teachers. Despite being essential members of the community, many teachers find it difficult to afford housing near the schools where they work. While California’s teacher’s have some of the highest median incomes compared to other states, the state’s disproportionately high housing costs result in many teachers still being considered low-income as defined by the according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The lack of affordable housing results in many teachers becoming rent-burdened, meaning that they spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing. Oftentimes, teachers are forced to make hour plus commutes to school each morning, or otherwise sacrifice other essentials in order to live closer to the school.
Teachers sacrifice a lot for us and do a lot for their students like going to school early in the morning and leaving school late at night just to help students become better. In addition, they spend long days and nights grading our work and make plans for classes to help students understand their material in the best way possible. Despite doing all this work, teachers get paid very low salaries in comparison to other occupations throughout the country. Teachers constantly go on strike or quit teaching overall because of the poor pay they receive each year. The combination of low pay and high prices of housing in the bay area is not convenient for them. Bay area apartments can cost up to over $5,000 a month and their salary may not be able to cover a monthly rent
