artist inspired acrylic
The purpose of this assignment was to dive deeper into and explore abstract art as an abstract artist of our choice. I chose Alma Thomas. Not only was she a relatively known black woman artist making her a rarity, but her intentionality of bringing joy behind every piece struck me. Her brush strokes and arrangement remind me of sun rings and I thought it'd be fun to investigate. For this piece I used acrylic paint only.
abstract painting process
abstract painting final
In this project I challenged my realist style and was to create an abstract work with acrylic paint as my medium inspired by a song. The title of this piece is Tears Too Ignite
My two inspirations for this painting were Girl Blue, Stevie Wonder & the album Blonde, Frank Ocean. Two of the main elements I used for this piece were, color and value. I really played with contrasting and diluting shades and tints. Speaking of contrast I tried to play with scale and contrast as my artistic principles. My focal point is the person (me) sitting by the blue spark. The intention of my atmosphere was to be in deep solitude. Solitude is where you see yourself the most and that is why there's a mirror theyre looking into. I used a basic complimentary pallete of oranges and blues.
This painting was quite meticulous. It took many hours of layering and waiting. This was of course after the initial sketch which came to me very easily. I have been in mostly hard points this semester and was dwelling. Every piece of art I make is a mirror of me and I just drew how I felt.
Not much changed for me through my process. As you can see my mock-up matches my final very well.
I very intentionally played with perspective to make it seem like the world was closing in. The warm hues are in stripes that widen the further away you get from the blue "fire." Unfortunately there wasn't another visual artist that sparked ideas for this painting for me. What was easy was seeing my exact vision, the hard part was getting there. The tediuousness of taping perfect lines to make perfect lines took so much time but it paid off. I just allowed the time to exist and be gracious with myself. To improve my painting if given the opprotunity, I would go back in and accentuate the contrast in the walls and redo the person almost completely. I grew with this painting by learning to excercise my patience.
