How can I depict aging and the stages of life in black and white? Every year I find I am more interested with the theme of aging, and I am linking that line of thought with my favorite type of portraiture: black and white. I want the facial expressions of the models and the setting to reflect the complexity of every stage of life. For example, I aimed to show that getting old does not guarantee sadness, and being young doesn't guarantee happiness.
The hardest part of this shoot I anticipate will be finding models of different ages. I will use a camera from my house that has a dramatic black and white filter.
To the left are my photographs of inspiration.
My first shoot was split into two parts: My dad and my brother. I photographed my brother laying in bed, both looking at the camera and not. Leo represents the teenage years in this shoot. The bed photos aim to encompass the depression that lots of teenagers experience especially.
My second shoot was three different parts. The first shoot took place at the meadow, and I was able to photograph sitters representing both the 20's and teens. Derek took on the form of a 20 year old because of his facial hair and adult aura. I placed derek in front of a fence in front of the silver lake reservoir. His optimistic facial expressions show the freedom of that age that comes with the departure to college. I also took photos of Derek with gloomy facial expressions to show a full realistic range of emotions.
The next part of the shoot I met up with my friend Truman who is a freshman here at Sequoyah. Truman appears slightly younger than his true age so in this shoot he embodied an elementary-age kid.
I began the third shoot with Morris as my subject and we walked around Silver Lake. I consider Silver Lake to be a perfect setting because I have lived here my entire life, so has Morris, and this place has been a constant throughout our ever changing lives.
I then went home and took photos of my father on my porch, who did not want to smile.
Lastly, I was fortunate enough to photograph Morris's neighbor and long time Silver Lake resident "Dick". At 92 years old, he was a perfect representative of the elderly. I photographed him in front of his american flag and his house. These photos turned out to be my favorite out of all of my shoots.
