Martin Luther King Jr. Contour Line Drawings

Above are my two Martin Luther King Contour Line Drawings. For this assignment our task was to draw MLK semi blind. We first were instructed to fill our paper with different watercolors and I was a little unsure how to do this because I was worried that my colors wouldn't match or be visible. I really had to pay attentions to the details of MLK because I wanted my viewers to see my art and immediately know who it was. After, we had finished drawing we used this special type of paper called carbon paper. This process was probably the most difficult because our drawing was at the top, carbon paper in the middle and our watercolor paper at the bottom. We weren't able to see how our drawings came out to till the end so I was trying not to worry too much about it. After I finished tracing I removed my carbon paper and filled in spaces where there were shadows which I filled in with watercolors. I also added a quote that felt meaningful to me on each of my drawings. By completing this assignment I learned that color combo is really important and so is being patient throughout the whole process.

4 Frames contour line drawings

This would probably be the assignment that I stressed out the most about. Our task was to find objects in a room and drawing them with continuous lines. I had a lot of trouble keeping my pencil on the paper at all time and would be tempted to start all over again. To your top left I drew a cup full of paintbrushes, bottom left I drew this beautifully crocheted pink sweater in the art room, to your top right I drew a scene from morning meeting with the speakers and the background are the tables and chairs and finally to your bottom right I drew a table and chair with Aimee's bags on top and cabinets in the back. What I enjoyed the most about making this assignment was being able to draw freely with as much as detail as possible, but I struggled have my drawings in one line. Even though I struggled a lot with the assignment it was my favorite assignment so far.

More/ Less Assignment

For this assignment we were asked to have a list of drawings of what we wanted more or less of in our life, almost like a new year resolution. I had to do a lot of thinking and consideration for this assignment. I wanted to have less of screen time, junk food, spending money, being aware of toxic friends and family members. I enjoyed drawing what I wanted more of in my life, I liked expressing myself with my silly drawings that looked kind of weird. By competing this assignment I was really able to think about what I wanted more in my life and less of. This assignment was a great help for my mental health.

3 self-portrait drawings based on acetate mirror tracing-3 photos

Media: White and black on charcoal on Toned Paper

Media: Color Pencil

Media: Watercolor

For this assignment I felt like there wasn't enough time to complete this assignment. We were asked to choose three different art media of our choice. We used are acetate tracings of our faces that we had done the previous night and use carbon paper to trace our faces over a piece of paper. There was brown and grey toned paper which were used specifically for white and black charcoal pencils, color pencils, and gradient pencils. I decided to use gradient pencils, color pencils, and watercolors. My first portrait I decided to try color pencils, which I had trouble making my face features noticeable. I probably could have shaded in more places, but this was my first time experiencing blending color pencils. My next portrait was with watercolors which was extremely difficult. I felt like I had no control in my paintbrush and paint. I had to constantly add less water because I was afraid of my watercolors going all over the place. My last portrait was definitely my favorite, I loved the way I used triangles as my shapes in order to have different values in my drawing. I had to make sure that my face was still visible so I tried my best shading as light as possible.

Automatic Drawing To Music

I really enjoyed this assignment because I felt like I was freely able to express myself to the music I was listening to. I chose acrylic paints as my media for this project. The music I was listening while painting this was Hagood Hardy - Theme from Anne of Green Gables. I chose this song because its from my favorite movie, Anne of Green Gables. This was probably one of my favorite assignments that we've completed so far this semester!

Continuous Line Drawing of a corner/wall

The purpose of this assignment was to draw a corner/ wall in our room using continuous line drawing. I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. At first I found it challenging to draw my closet with continuous lines. I found myself often wanting to pick up my pen and start again. I did have trouble putting more detail into this drawing. I was surprised how much I liked my closet space looking a little bit funky without having straight lines.

Blind Face Contour Line Drawing

For this assignment I decided draw my mom's face. I decided to do blind face contour lines. I felt that if I did semi blind I would worry too much on the results rather than focusing on my moms face. A few areas of improvement for this assignment are slowing down, and adding more detail into my faces. I really liked the unique lines that were resulted in the end.

Mono Type Experiment (tracing and ghost)

Tracing Print Ghost Print

For this assignment our goal was to trace our faces over a piece of glass and roll it with a brayer. We were instructed to use block printing ink and roll it out on the table to make it more even and then roll the ink onto the glass. If I'm being completely honest I hated the mess that the block printing ink made, at time its felt overwhelming to work really fast because we didn't want the ink to dry. Once the ink was spread evenly onto the glass we used a piece of paper and a picture of us that we had taken the day before and started tracing our faces onto the glass. I used the end of a paintbrush in order to trace my face. After we were done with our tracing we did the ghost print which is very similar to the tracing, we put our other piece of paper on top of our glass to not let the leftover ink go to waste and our print come out lighter. If I were to do this assignment again I would definitely work a lot faster and try and add more detail into my prints.

MonoType Experiment (Collage under, Collage over)

Collage Under Collage Over

This Monotype experiment was very challenging for me. I had a hard time with collaging with prints on top. The purpose of this assignment was have a monotype with adding mixed media on top of an existing print and mixed media that's ready to be to be printed on top. I have the most fun doing the Collage Under Monotype because I used a picture of one of my birds, Pedro and have multiple prints on top of my collage. An area of improvement is keeping in mind how much ink I was using, at time when I would use too much blocking printing ink my print wouldn't be visible. anymore. For my second Monotype experiment I used cutouts from newspaper and used acrylic paint on top of it. I then did a tracing of my face on top of the collage and I used the color red to make my face visible, as you can tell I didn't use enough ink and didn't work fast enough since my face is not too visible. Overall I really enjoyed this assignment and hope to try again in the future.

Speedy Cut Shapes and Name

Name Print

Shape Print

Shape and Name Print

The purpose of assignment was to have a 50% positive and negative amount of white and black on our speedy cut. We used carving tools in order to achieve the stamp we wanted. Before beginning to carve our print and names we created at least 4 different designs. Carving our speedy cut was a bit messy and we constantly had to make sure our stamp was cleaned up and the edges were precise. After we finished carving out our design we used a brayer and put ink over our stamp and made our print. It was the same process for creating our name stamp as well. Finally, after we finished with our shape and name print we put our name print over our shape print. Something I wished to improve if I were able to do this assignment again is cleaning up my lines in my stamp. I was really surprised how not carving deep or clean enough really affects your stamp.

Value Scales

Charcoal on Toned Paper Scales

Graphite Scales

Watercolor Scales

Color pencil Scales

For my value scales we used four different medias, Black and white Charcoal on toned paper, graphite pencils, color pencils, and watercolor. Essentially our goal was to have have a range from darkness to lightness with all of these different medias. My top two favorite medias that we worked with was using the graphite and color pencils because I really liked the results that they produced. I felt that when I used watercolors and charcoal I had no control whatsoever. I have to use a certain amount of water and paint if I wanted to get the results I need for the watercolor, and when I used the Charcoal I would either go too dark and would have a lot of difficulty blending.

Self-Portrait with facial proportions

B&W photo with the facial proportions marked on my face with color marker

Self-portrait pencil drawing

For this assignment was specifically designed to practice face proportions for our upcoming project. We had been asked to take a elevated selfie and turn it black and white. We used that photo to practice face proportions and used color markers to show those steps. We watched a couple tutorials on how to shade properly in order to get realistic shadows on our face. My favorite part about this assignment was probably practicing face proportions with color markers because everyone's looked sorta funky and weird. I found my Self-portrait pencil drawing the most difficult because I struggled with making my face look realistic and match with my black and white photo. I really enjoyed shading in my hair and added a few waves to match similar hair styles but was bothered by the fact that because my hair is straight there was no interesting texture to add.
