What is the difference between AVID and the M-A Computer Academy?
The programs both work to close the opportunity gap that is so evident in our community but go about it in different ways.
AVID supports students in a single elective class by teaching academic and advocacy skills as they challenge themselves in their core classes with the ultimate goal of help students be successful in advanced high school classes and eventually a 4-year college. Students usually join AVID in middle school or 9th grade, and continue in the program until the end of 12th grade.
The Academy supports students by providing a "small school" community on our large campus and teaching them technical skills in order to be successful in a variety of fields after high school. Students in the Academy take a majority of their classes together, with the same teachers. Students apply to the Academy at the end of their 9th grade, and start the program in 10th grade. They then stay in the program until the end of 12th grade.
