Henry Spooner Eagle Project

Suburban Park is a quintessential and iconic neighborhood in the City of Menlo Park. It was constructed during the late 40s using funds from the Veterans Administration bill after World War II.
One special feature of Suburban Park is the stylized street signs. The original sign renditions featured the street names hand-carved into wooden horizontal boards that were hung from metal scroll brackets and secured to redwood posts. These unique signs lent to the historical charm and original close-knit neighborhood feel of our community.
Since originally being installed in the late 1960s, the signs had fallen into disrepair. The residents were longing to have them restored. The Suburban Park Neighborhood Board inquired via several avenues with the City of Menlo Park to request that the signs be refurbished. Unfortunately, this request was declined with a statement that Suburban Park is the only Menlo Park neighborhood with this type of distinctive signs, and therefore, municipal funds and labor could not be allocated to restoring them.
The neighbors and Board were looking for someone to accept the challenge of replacing all the signs, posts and brackets. Simultaneously, Henry Spooner was looking for a project to meet his Eagle Scout requirements. After conducting an informal poll with residents, pitching the idea at an October 2021 Board meeting, and getting approval from the Troop 222 leadership and Pacific Skyline Scout Council, Henry received the green light to proceed.
The project kicked off at the 2021 Annual Suburban Park Street Dance, held August 27, 2021. There I met with Mayor Drew Combs, along with neighbors Patrick and Michael Coffey, whose parents had hand-made the original street signs. Linda Hubbard, from the local online publication InMenlo, published this article on August 30, 2021 about my project, the history behind the signs and the wonderful sense of community in our neighborhood. Linda returned to the 2022 Street Dance to follow-up on our full-circle story about the completion of the project. Read more here.
