High Achievers

Life is a gift.

Give something back

By becoming something more.

How are students identified as a High Achiever?

Students are initially classed as high achievers at ASA if they achieved significantly above national average in their Key Stage 2 assessments (year 6). These students should be achieving some of the highest outcomes and should be aiming to achieve or exceed their challenge targets.

All students should be aiming to be the best they can be and to aid this we have also identified students who are making significant progress due to their outstanding attitude to learning. These students are our High Flyers.

A few students will be identified as part of a 7@7 group if they appear to be capable of achieving at least a grade 7 in seven or more of their subjects at GCSE.

What opportunities are there to discuss this?

Before each parents evening we send a text home giving details about how you can book an appointment with our Director for High Achievers to discuss your child’s progress.

Each Thursday on a Week B the Director of High Achievers is available to speak to parents in person or over the phone until 7pm.

To book a telephone or face-to-face meeting simply fill in the form here.

You can also contact the school through the main reception if you have any concerns or questions.

What opportunities are available for High Achievers?

We are always reviewing our available opportunities to ensure that the very best provision is available for all students at ASA. Some of the opportunities we currently have are:

  • STEM Club (KS3)
  • FameLab Academy (Year 9)
  • AQA Project (Year 9 and 10)
  • High Flyers Google Classrooms (Pre-Sixth)
  • High Flyers Study Room (Pre-Sixth)

What if my child is not performing as expected?

If a student falls below our expectations for them the Director of High Achievers will meet with the student. Individual strategies will be developed with the student to help them make the progress they are capable of.

What if my child is feeling the pressure of a high workload or is worried about something?

At ASA we have a strong pastoral system and we hope that students feel they can discuss issues with any member of staff. The Director of High Achievers is more than happy to discuss any issues or concerns and is currently located in 221.

Where more can I do?

To bring out the very best in all students consider the following:

  • Encourage reading of a wide range of books / magazines / newspapers
  • Encourage reading aloud
  • Find a word a day which is new and try to use it in context
  • Help develop observation skills by asking “What do you notice?”
  • Develop curiosity by asking “Why do you think that is like it is?”
  • Develop memory by asking students to recall facts, what they did or have learnt during the day or specific information about past events
  • Develop concentration by encouraging students to only complete one task at a time rather than trying to multitask
  • Ensure students are eating well, drinking enough and are taking breaks when studying
  • Discuss the “big” questions e.g. the nature of the universe, the problem of suffering in the world, environmental issues
  • Encourage interests and hobbies
  • Encourage your child to not use TV / computer / phone screens in the hour before they go to sleep.
  • If devices are switched off during study time it will enable students to be completely focused on the task.
  • Children work at their peak if they have 8-10hrs sleep.
