Creating a safe learning environment for students of all ages, without the worry and hassle of cost. Music shouldn't have a price tag.Â
SoundForge was created after four years of teaching in public schools, where I saw firsthand the excitement and confidence students gained when learning instruments commonly used in modern bands. While traditional music programs are valuable, opportunities to learn in a full band setting are still uncommon in many parts of Missouri. Students are often taught individual instruments, such as guitar, but rarely get the chance to experience what it feels like to play together as a band.
I wanted to change that and make this kind of musical experience accessible to anyone who wanted to learn, regardless of background or financial situation. In May 2025, SEMO SoundForge was launched with the goal of providing a free, hands-on modern band program for the community.
Thanks to generous support from the Songbirds Foundation, Music Will, and private donors, we now have a growing collection of instruments available for students to use during class. This ensures that every participant can fully engage in the program, even if they do not own an instrument of their own.
Curriculum
SoundForge primarily follows the Music Will approach to music education, which focuses on meeting students where they are and helping them grow into confident musicians at their own pace. This teaching style emphasizes scaffolding skills, simplifying chords and concepts, and building understanding step by step so that every student can experience success early and continue progressing.
We believe that music education should feel relevant, engaging, and empowering. That is why students at SoundForge learn to play music they already enjoy, spanning a wide range of genres and styles. By connecting instruction to music they recognize and love, students stay motivated, develop skills faster, and discover a deeper connection to making music.
Our goal is not just to teach instruments, but to create an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired as they grow both musically and personally.
