Bethany Davis has been working in the educational field since 2007. She began as a Deaf Education paraprofessional before becoming a certified ASL interpreter, and eventually a full time ASL teacher. Prior to her current role, she helped write the ASL curriculum for two different school districts and piloted the ASL program at Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD, where she currently teaches and mentors.
Bethany was inspired by the 7 Steps to a Language-Rich, Interactive Foreign Language Classroom, extending the concepts within to fit the complex grammar and visual aspects of American Sign Language. She made it an opportunity to provide additional resources for ASL teachers. She has presented at the local, state, national, and international levels in ASL instruction and community building.
Bethany wishes to continue collaborating with the Deaf community and ASL teachers to provide best practices in language instruction and ASL retention for both Deaf and Hearing students.
"Bethany Davis is a wonderful and incredibly insightful teacher to observe. Her use of classroom techniques to educate her students, while incorporating the 7 Steps of teaching a foreign language creates exactly the type of consistent output necessary to meet the TEKS for American Sign Language (ASL). From her use of memes to creating a voices off environment, her relatability and control of her classroom foster a wonderful learning classroom. She uses clear expectations to prepare her students in her daily powerpoint for when students first arrive to class. They discuss what they have learned or will learn to review and theorize what they can infer based on their existing knowledge of the language. Her approach to correction to students’ use of the language is one to definitely apply to your own approach. Overall, her lessons are a great resource to reference as a first year teacher and I will for sure be applying her techniques to my teaching and incorporating her tactics into my lessons."
