Topic: Forces can stop moving things & can effect speed and direction
Objectives:
Students will:
- Observe friction at work.
- Explore the difference in speed of toy car on different surfaces.
- Investigate the movement of toy car on different surfaces by recording it on mobile cameras.
- Investigate and unravel the following phenomenon:
- Why does a toy car move differently on different surface?
- What slows things down?
- Why can you go faster down a slide?
- Students will form new questions to investigate the effect of force on different objects.
Preparation
Session 1 (20th-Nov-2017):
- Students will be asked to recall the terms, “force”, “push” and “pull”.
- Children will be shown a few clips/pictures and they will be asked to reflect on how the force is acting on the object, using multimedia.
- They will be asked to explain their choices.
- They will be encouraged to generate more questions with regard to the activity.
Session 2 (21-Nov-2017):
- Students will be taken outside the classroom and will be given a demonstration of how toy cars move on different surfaces.
- The toy car will first be rolled on different surfaces and students will be asked to reflect on why they think there is a difference in speed on different surfaces.
- Students will then be divided three groups; five in each. Two students will use the meter sticks to measure the distance. One student will move the toy car on different surfaces. Third student will take pictures to create a portfolio later on. Two students will take readings and record observations. The roles will be switched by teacher for different surfaces.
Session 3 (22-Nov-2017):
- Students will unravel the mysteries one by one:
- Why does a toy car move differently on different surface?
- What slows things down?
2. There will be discussion regarding these two points regarding the role of friction.
3. Students will share their readings and make a portfolio related to the activity.

- Toy cars.
- Tape measures.
- Meter Sticks.
- Mobile Cameras.
- Multimedia.

Assignment and Activities:
1. Experiencing the effect of friction by moving toy cars on different surfaces.
2. Preparing a portfolio on desktops/laptops using tool of their choice
Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will create a portfolio of the pictures taken, using a platform of their choice (a few platforms like story maker will be introduced so that they can choose how to represent their pictures), and explain how force affects movement of cars on different surfaces.
Success Criteria:
- Students will be able to define friction.
- Students will be able to identify the role friction plays in affecting the speed of objects.
- Students will be able to explain the content in their portfolio.
- Students should be able to answer questions in their workbooks independently.
TIM Level:
The lesson plan is focused on level 3 i.e. Infusion Level of TIM as students will choose a technology of their choice to create the portfolio.
Note: Adaptation Level of TIM was used due to lack of resources available in school.
