Why do we need the Numeracy Co-Requisite?

Over the last 10 years, New Zealand has not been doing as well at reading, writing and maths as some other countries. The new co-requisite has been designed to set the national standard for 'functional literacy and numeracy'. 

The new co-requisite has been designed to assess the literacy and numeracy of students required for NCEA and beyond. 

These co-requisites will help ensure that students have the skills to support them in further studies, work, and life. They are part of the changes to the numeracy and literacy requirements scheduled to become a mandatory part of NCEA from 2024/5.
