Sessions 5 & 6
Classrooms alive with purposeful academic oral language have a profound impact on English learner success. When elementary teachers create the conditions for students to meaningfully engage and interact with the content AND provide rich scaffolds so they can express their understanding of that content, English learners thrive! This two-part module, with embedded pre-session work and follow-up application and reflection, focuses on how teachers can enact Principle 2 of the English Learner Roadmap policy in their virtual or in-person classrooms. Also aligned with CA’s ELA/ELD Framework, teachers will learn research-based practices for facilitating collaborative discourse, harnessing formative assessment to design responsive lessons in Designated ELD, and leveraging home language to promote English proficiency.
