SITE : Dahisar Bridge
SITE STUDY :
The site is located at a sloping edge of the Dahisar river, which continues ahead into the mangroves. The site of intervention is the garbage cleaning machine and the 30 m stretch ahead of it. The site is a muddy slope filled with garbage. The site is accessed and inhabited by the B.M.C workers who clean the garbage from the water. The machine with the help of the conveyer belt pulls the garbage upwards and dumps it into the bin which is further collected by the garbage truck.
FLOWS :
We worked with the human flows in which we came across various people who use the space for different purposes like drivers, mechanics, BMC workers and local people.
We specifically interacted with the BMC workers as we found the process of garbage cleaning interesting. We tried to understand their movements throughout the day and their work process of cleaning garbage from water. We tried to understand the mechanism of the machine and how the workers operated it. We also tried to understand their setup during different tidal conditions.

SECTIONS:
Program :
We intended to make a design intervention that enhances the work of the BMC workers and creates a workspace for them. The intent was to provide them a space from where they could observe garbage collection as well as record the video which they need to submit everyday to the BMC. Also they had no space to keep their equipments like safety vest, ropes, boots, etc. so we decided to build a storage space for them. As it is a public space it will be used by other people as well so to inhabit them we created a covered sitting space that could protect them from sun and rain. A washroom was also essential a the space is used constantly by the drivers and other workers. Also me added a viewing deck at a height for people to click picture and move around.
Design Process of the Intervention :
Iteration 1 :
We designed a sitting space across the 30 m stretch of our intervention site which allowed trees to grow simultaneously with the buildform. The size of steps was 1.5m x 0.75m x 0.2m, so that a even two people can site together comfortably.
Material : Stone
Iteration 2 :
We tried to stick to the initial design and modify it. We tried to add a halfway bridge and a house to the existing intervention. The halfway bridge could help people to see the garbage cleaning process from a height and not get affected by it in any sense. The house was designed for workers in such a way that they could access it through the road and also see the garbage collection through a window, also the height of the house would help in maintaining the privacy of the workers.
Iteration 3:
We tried to design a pathway which is covered with large green patches. These green plants act as the walls that shape the pathway. We tried to incorporate benches with the walls constructed. The shape of the pathway created smaller spaces where people could sit with certain privacy yet create possibilities of interactions amongst itself.
Iteration 4:
Going back to the initial idea of stepping down the slope, we tried to design programmes on the slope. Developing the initial idea helped in imagining different ways in which the design could get better by making necessary changes. We added programmes like an observation deck, washroom, public sitting area, storage room and a mori. These would help in the efficiency of working of the workers.
Iteration 5:
In order to take the design from the last iteration ahead and resolve it further, we tried to place the programmes differently so that they could help in the efficient working of workers. We made a observation deck with circular roof, washroom at the end of the slope, storage above at the top of the slope and a covered sitting space.
