Environmental Flows
The most notable change that happened in Moti Daman beach is the construction of a promenade where the complex landscape and dynamic nature of the existing environment has been completely ignored. The area near the small creek and the fort have created a whole ecology with different vegetation, micro-environment and the behavior leading to different sound, smell and a temperature pattern and it creates the most pleasing experience. All the construction happening here is controlling the environment instead of including it and creates a static experience which discourages people from visiting the place. At the time of high - tide, nature overpowers construction and destruction happens.
Argumentative drawing and Intent
In response to that, what can be done to restore the plantation and the atmosphere? How can a space be designed to merge the landscape and conditions into it by constructing without harming existing ecology? Can the form be programmed in space to experience various phenomena through different senses?
Program for the Design -
In response to the intent, a design to restore the vegetation and the whole ecology and make it as an element of design. Small pocket spaces to create curiousity amongst people with different functionality.
Museum of History of Forest and mangorve awareness
Restoring vegetation, and ecology - Eco-park
Gathering Space
Eatery
Viewing point
Relaxation Pods
Fishing Space
The area near the fort wall and the river ( at the backside of the fort ) has various temperature patterns and a calm atmosphere which might attract people. As the intention of the whole coastal project is to attract tourists and locals, this space creates curiosity to see what comes next after the end of promenade .
Design Process
Conceptual design Strategies -
Sense of floating
Materiality and structure not disturbing existing ecology
Use of variety of landscape as element
Design responding to dynamic environmental conditions
the design process started with the idea of ecopark, where the movement will not be monotonic. Then the idea of floating pavilions to emerge the landscape into landscape. Through a process, we designed a looped boardwalk, with multiple possibilities of movement throughout the space with different functions.
Design Drawing
The spaces are created through the mangrove, so after entering the space, people can inhabit the nature by walking in between mangroves, there are many sitting and relaxing spaces aligning to the walkway, first space after entering will be gathering space, the a small museum, an eatery leading to viewing points, also, there will be floating pavilion from where people can experience whole landscape.
Whole structure will be made up of bamboo elevated on 2.5 m of height from the ground so that the existing ecology won't be disturbed and create a minimum footprint. There are spaces in between walks to merge into the landscape . The floating pavilion will have the mechanism of barrels stacked into framed wood structure, so when the creek is not active, the space will be still working or else float because of it when it's active. There are spaces with open, semi open and closed roof, for respective programs.
Design Details
The design is to create a playful nature where people can have a nice time between trees and can experience the pleasing atmosphere of the site. It also could act as an extension for the promenade as its endpoint.
