The studio will be focused around training the participants in articulating architecture in a manner that resource consumption is rationalized and the experience of built-form resonates with the environmental dimensions. Here the ideas around siting, climatic control, use of appropriate structural and constructional techniques, design of relevant water, air and energy systems, etc. shall be explored architecturally such that they go beyond their mechanical imperatives and shape the experience of space. The module will equip students with capabilities in designing environment-led systems in designing built-form through intensive case studies, environmental analysis, system studies and design and detail explorations.
Redesigning of a pre-primary school in the peri-urban area that will be off the grid taking care of its water, electricity and waste within itself and making it a system by which it will run on its own(partly or fully) with minimal or no additional resource consumption. The student is expected to think through various systems involved in the whole process of building Material system: Choice of material. construction technology Climatic System: temperature, humidity, wind, sun, vegetation Building Services: Water Drainage, Water supply Structural System: material available and used to make a structural system which responds to context and climate. Environmental system: understanding environmental cycle in macro and micro context and to alter, modify or redesigning it to achieve desired intent.
To make students understand that built form is generated through overlapping systems. These systems include spatial organization that shapes inhabitation; structural systems made of building elements; spatial systems of form, volume, scale and materiality.
To establish the relationship between systems like sanitation; climatic systems and water system environmental system and experiences related to it.
To make students aware that these systems interact together to produce spatial experience along with resource and utilitarian efficiency.
