Environment is a set of interconnected networks which balance each other to maintain the rhythmic flows. While imagining a space one would imagine the space in an utilitarian aspect which completely ignores the environmental consequences, and its effect on biodiversity. Negotiating with the terrain and the flora and fauna around, the site is then imagined as a set of interconnections which flow into each other and hence creating an interdependent and coexisting space maintaining rhythmic flows to generate new spatial priorities which would acknowledge the consequences on the environment.
The project tries to rearticulate the question of interaction by creating spaces where interactions are almost natural and come as a default with the experience of the space.
The site being a basalt rock untouched plot surrounded by a lot of industries facilitates a variety of thresholds with numerous biodiversity overlapping with each other. Human interaction in the site needs to be so shuttle that it would almost merge with the existing scenario. The intent is to design a wet land observatory with an additional function to it. Erecting a stand alone build form would create a stark difference in the experience of the site and hence taking away the richness of habitat there. So here, the building is kept lower (single floored) and sparse to make it merge with the landscape around. Each of the function is separated and connect back with a series of staircase and corridors. Series of courtyards, terraces and openings allows it to be porous blurring the edge of the inside and outside. Terrace being the additional features to the conservatory invites people to enjoy the view of the water body which then becomes a public space for the community living around and the truck drivers who wait on the road nearby allowing new interactions to happen. The building is placed in such a way that it starts from the highest level ( ie. south -eastern part of the site )and slowly moves down towards the water.
There are 2 entrances to the site one on the north which is through a cascading steps. This series of steps has 2 diversion one of which leads to the terrace and the other to the structure below ( ie. To the entrance foyer) The other entrance is towards the southern side of the site which is a ramp taking you directly to the café area . The entrances being so dynamic allows the user to choose his own way of navigating through the space .The testing lab is placed on the higher level which becomes a slightly isolated space where new experiments and testing can take place. The research lab is right near the water keeping it easily accessible to the water and the biodiversity around. Library and the observatory are kept near each other ( near the water) to allow reading while observing the nature. Gathering space and education and training spaces are in the center which makes them easily accessible from all the sides. The building is made up of RCC frame structure with brick infill. The terrace is detailed in such a way the the parapets becomes a seating, numerous steps can become a play space for kids, flat parts of the terrace can become a gatherings space for a larger no. of people. Difference in the level of terraces can allow version gatherings to happen the the same time but can still be seen from far away due to level modulation. The building being inclined and stepping down towards the water encourage people to know more about the environment they are living in.
