The South Dakota Volunteer Naturalists Program is a volunteer program for adults who are interested in learning about nature, developing the naturalist's mindset, and sharing that interest with others through education outreach, stewardship, and service.

Pass the background check (upon acceptance)
Pay the fee (upon acceptance).
Complete the training program with at least 40 hours of combined classroom and field instruction.
Donate at least 20 hours of volunteer service and 10 advanced training hours to maintain volunteer status

The 2025 training fee is $75. This covers the costs of name badge, pin, and program administration.
Our 12-week program will be held virtually via Zoom on Tuesday evenings, starting March 2025. Throughout the year there will be in-person field trips across the state.
Yes, participants must be 18.
Classes and field trips are led by South Dakota scientists, naturalists, and natural resource professionals.
