The South Dakota Volunteer Naturalists Program began in the spring of 2020 as a partnership of the Black Hills Parks & Forests Association, Black Hills State University, the South Dakota Dept. of Game, Fish, & Parks, and the South Dakota Discovery Center. In 2021 South Dakota State University Extension joined the partnership. The executive committee is composed of members from each organization that provide the operation management of the South Dakota Volunteer Naturalists Program.
