¡Hola y bienvenidos a español 2!

Welcome to Spanish 2! You are about to embark on a journey into the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. This course develops Spanish language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It covers basic Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. It also explores the history, geography, and customs of the Spanish-speaking world. This course (2 quarters) is designed for students with novice knowledge of the Spanish language. The prerequisites for this course are SPAN 1 with a C or better.

Students Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a minimum novice-high speaking proficiency level according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency guidelines.
Demonstrate a minimum novice-high writing proficiency level according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency guidelines.
Demonstrate a minimum novice-high reading proficiency level according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency guidelines.

We will be using Realidades Online textbook and Supplemental resources provided by profe Paz.

What to Expect

TIME COMMITMENT

Expect to set aside a minimum of 20 hours per week for your participation in reading, studying, viewing videos, and completing learning activities and assignments, which is the equivalent to the hours in a classroom per week plus the standard High School recommended additional hours to study and complete homework outside of class.

Think about your week and schedule times to study Spanish at a consistent time throughout your week like you do meals, workouts, work, playtime, and dates. Schedule Spanish into your routine and keep that date with yourself. For example, from 7-10 am or 8-10 pm, or split it up and do 7-9 am and then 12-2 pm, but please, DO schedule it or you will fall behind.

PARTICIPATION

Your constant and active class participation is needed to fulfill the objectives of this course. Students are expected to listen, speak Spanish as much as possible, engage in, and complete all learning activities and assignments. Students are also expected to arrive on time for class.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

The instructor interacts with students in any of the following ways: via email, class announcements, warm-up activities (diarios/ warm-up), audiovisual tutorials, and feedback from students on lectures or follow-up questions on assignments when randomly called on by your instructor. Students may also ask questions in class.

NOTE: Make sure that you view the instructor's feedback on assignments. If you don´t already have the Mote Google chrome extension, I recommend that you add it at your earliest convenience.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY, PLAGIARISM, AND CLASS CONDUCT

There is zero tolerance for cheating and plagiarism. Cheating and plagiarism can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties include a failing grade on a particular exam, paper, project, or assignment to a failing grade in the course. Disruptive behavior or deliberate falsification of information is the basis for a referral to administration or dismissal from class.

Oral Assessments

Oral Assessments allow students to show what they have learned thus far. You will have a few live conversations, in Spanish, with your instructor. These assessments will take place on an individual basis with your instructor during the first and second quarters and will be based on the content covered up to that point in the term.

Students will NOT be able to consult outside sources during this live, face-to-face conversation. Below are a few ideas to prepare for these comprehensive Oral Assessments:

- - work through all of the assigned activities
  - complete all of the assignments HONESTLY without the aid of friends and online translators
  - Study the Oral Assessment prompt available before the interview

Parents

Please be sure your child is proactive. Before requesting a parent meeting, your child must come to discuss whatever questions or issues s/he may have with Spanish. (i.e. review an assignment during my office hours or discuss study strategies) This is their class and as a teacher, I want to talk with my students first.

89.1, 89.2, 89.3, 89.4, 89.49 is NOT an A-. Please do not ask it to be. To maintain the integrity of a grade, there will be no rounding. Grades are based on the above grade point scale. Grades are NON-NEGOTIABLE

Grades are NON-NEGOTIABLE, especially at the end of a quarter or term. A student with a borderline grade runs the risk of earning a lower grade if he/she does not review and prepare well for the final exam. The grade calculated in Aeries after the final exam will be the final grade, with no exceptions. Thank you for understanding.
