Advanced Reader Collection
Families should be aware that the books in this collection contain material that is more "young adult" in nature and writing style. Titles in the Advanced Reader collection may contain strong language, sexual references, and/or other mature themes.
If a student would like to borrow a book from our Advanced Readers line, they need advance permission from their guardian to do so. Prior to checking out the book our Learning Commons staff will email parents/caregivers for permission. Email permission is needed any time a student wants to check out a book from this collection unless their guardian provides blanket approval for the current school year.
WHY HAVE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL BOOKS AT ALL? In the interest of keeping students engaged in reading, our Learning Commons offers a broad selection of titles. Keeping our shelves stocked with titles that appeal to the wide spectrum of reading abilities, emotional maturity, and interest levels of students in middle school is very important. All books in the 'Advanced Readers' line are well-received, well-reviewed titles and many have won literary awards.
If interested, families can read detailed reviews on the website Common Sense Media before making any decisions. (This is highly recommended.) Put simply, the boundaries between middle school reading and young adult literature can be decidedly murky. One student may be ready to read more advanced material while another may not. The 'Advanced Readers' line gives families the option to let their child read more advanced material if they feel it is appropriate.
