English 12

Individualism, Freedom, & Responsibility

12th Grade English Language Arts

The English 12 curriculum allows students to explore a variety of literary themes by studying classic, modern, and influential works from British, European, and other various authors representing many periods and cultures—including novels, short stories, poems, plays dramatic works, and expository writings. Students will read major literary works such as 19th-century novels, Shakespeare, short stories, poetry, and seminar novels while learning mythological and literary allusions. More importantly, students will use critical thinking skills and apply them to assignments and projects given in class. The central theme of English 12, “Individualism, Freedom, and Responsibility,” provides an excellent opportunity for students to conduct a survey of classic and thought-provoking literature. Senior students will also work in cooperative-learning groups in which they share ideas and concepts from the works read in class. They will be challenged to grow through class discussions, writing assignments, creative projects, dramatizations, oral presentations, and writing workshops.

During the spring semester, seniors will have the opportunity to focus on a senior project where students identify their interests and pursue career goals through research, writing, website creativity, and senior speeches. Senior students will leave this class prepared for college and business reading, writing, language, listening and speaking challenges.
