Career Project
It's never too early to start thinking about tomorrow!
Part One - Explore a career : take an Interest Survey
1. Go to www.cacareerzone.org and take the survey to see what jobs match your interests.
2. Choose a career that interests you. It must be a choice that involves going to college, trade school or a training academy.
DO NOT CHOOSE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OR ROCK STAR OR MOVIE STAR!
Trust me, these are harder to research. Keep it simple! Even if some of you will REALLY become the above one day (and buy me a black Porsche), choose something easier to research.
3. Great websites to research careers include:
Use Google Advanced Searches and other credible places on the Internet to research your career!
4. Once you zero in on the career you will research, tell me. Do not begin research until I have approved your career research choice. Only serious career choices! No WWF Wrestlers, etc.
*Open a Google Doc and take notes as you go. Every time you find a helpful website, copy and paste the URL onto this doc. It'll save you time down the road.
Part Two - Explore Education & Training
1. Go to this site to find out the requirements you need to graduate from high school.
FOUR YEAR PLAN (SDA) Course Descriptions (SDA)
FOUR YEAR PLAN (LCC) Course Descriptions (LCC)
(You will need to identify the courses you must take to graduate from high school on your website.)
2. Pick at least 2 universities or trade schools that you would like to attend. Research the following:
Location, Costs, What subject you will Major in...
Find out the difference between a Community College and a Four Year College.
3. If your career requires Graduate School, be sure to pick at least one Grad school you'd like to attend and research the following:
Location, Costs, degree you need to earn
Examples of Grad School...
*Graduate school comes after your first four years of college.
If you want to become a teacher, you must to grad school to get your teaching credential
If you want to become a lawyer, you must go to law school
If you want to become a first responder (working as a police officer or for fire department), you have to go to a police or fire training academy.
If you want to be a scientist, you will need to get a Master's or Doctorate in the subject you want to study.
Part Three - Create a Career Presentation using Google Slides
Your presentation must include the following:
1 Intro Slide - "How to become a...." - include your name, date, period & job title along with a good graphic to capture the attention of your audience
1 High School Slide (Copy & paste your 4 year plan here & add pictures of the campus, clubs you might be in, etc.)
2 College Slides ( 2 different colleges or trade schools including pictures and all the info. above. Use a new slide for each college.)
3 to 5 Job Description Slides * (see below... you will likely have several different slides describing the elements below)
2 to 3 Photo Gallery Slides (pictures of people doing this job, etc.)
*(Prepare to answer these questions with your research on the Job Description Slides: )
*Job description and responsibilities of your dream job
*Education/training it takes to achieve dream job
*What steps you plan to take to achieve your dream job?
*What interests you about this job?
*What the salary is for this job?
*What the job outlook is for this job?
*How many hours will you work a week?
*What strengths do you have that will help you in this job?
*What are some negative aspects about this job?
*Sample pictures or video of people doing this job
