ELD III 9-12th Grades (10 Credits)

ELD 3 is a course designed to continue English language development as well as to introduce students to mainstream literature and grade level language arts common core standards. The course focuses on vocabulary expansion, grammar and sentence structure, paragraph structure, essay formatting, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. EDGE level B, designed for English language learners at the intermediate level, is the textbook used. In addition, novels are read throughout the year as well as poetry, essays, and short stories connected to the curriculum. This course is aligned with the California State Standards in English and the California English Language Development (ELD) standards.

ELD IV 9-12th Grades (10 Credits)

ELD 4 (or Sheltered) English provides English Language Learners with comprehensive instruction that meets the content standards of a 9th-10th grade curriculum while simultaneously developing student’s English language skills, specifically in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The curriculum course includes short stories, novels, memoir, poetry, non-fiction(argument) research and the study of conventions. Students engage in speaking daily, as a means to progress in their oral language and listening development through meaningful class discussions, presentations, debates and partner discussions. Students will practice several modes of writing including literary analysis, memoir, argument, synthesis and creative writing. Students will develop critical thinking skills while being supported in their own language development, and apply these skills to essays, creative projects, and speeches. The course is aligned with both the California State Standards for Language Arts as well as the English Language Development standards.
