This project aims to answer the research question: What challenges do the Kazakhstani Higher Education Institutions with English Medium Instruction (EMI) face at organizational and instructional levels, and how can these challenges be responded effectively?

Project objectives:

Conducting a systematic review of the literature on English Medium of Instruction (EMI), and conducting preliminary analysis of data on the strategic plans, institutional language, and academic policies of HEIs with EMI in Kazakhstan.
Exploring the challenges faced by the leadership of HEIs with EMI at an organizational level through semi-structured interviews (Board of Directors, Rectors, Vice-rectors, Deans).
Analyzing the challenges encountered by content lecturers and EMI students in delivering and comprehending content knowledge in English in a Kazakhstani HEI.
Investigating the ways of collaboration between the teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL teachers) and Content lecturers that will respond to EMI-related challenges of students effectively.
Developing practical recommendations for the senior leadership team of HEIs with EMI and for the content lecturers in carrying out EMI provision, and designing coursebooks for EMI students on Social sciences.

Target audience

The project addresses two main audiences:

(1) scholars in the field of Higher Education and applied linguistics,

(2) practitioners - content lecturers, leaders, administrators at HEIs, and policymakers in education and science fields.
