One best practice that can connect to a growth mindset is by planning how to install a growth mindset in students. Having a growth mindset, especially in students, can allow them to develop their abilities. As teachers, we are constantly looking for strategies to implement with our class to achieve the best outcomes for our students. Luckily, involving growth mindset into the curriculum does not make any huge curricular changes. In the article by University of Massachusetts Global, Crowley gives an example of how to blend growth mindset into your lesson plan by mixing growth mindset into the language you use to talk to your students. For example :praise the process - not just the results, communicate realistic expectations of outcomes, establish a culture that promotes effort, learning and resilience, and facilitate positive self-talk.”
At first, it may be difficult to figure out how to implement a growth mindset in students. This article explains a few different ways of how to do so. In my classroom, I have implemented one of the 10 ways that this article elaborates on; Allowing Time for Goal-Based Journaling. I use exit tickets for my students and in these exit tickets I have students set learning goals for the unit we are in. For example, I ask students at the beginning of the unit what their goal is for the end of the unit based on the sport we are playing. Throughout the unit, we discuss in groups the progression that each student has met toward their goals through an exit ticket. These 10 ways of implementing a growth mindset in students can help students prepare their talents and abilities not only inside of the classroom, but out of the classroom as well.
As PE teachers, we know that the best way to deal with high stress levels, obesity, improve cognitive function for academic work and increase student engagement is physical activity. Being physically active can make you a healthier person, emotionally, physically and mentally.
