Coaches/Mentors
From Induction Handbook (page 7)
Induction Mentor Qualifications
Induction mentors are assigned by SDSU. There is not an option to choose your own site-based mentor. However, mentors may be recommended to the Induction Director for consideration. All SDSU mentors have been trained in SDSU Induction expectations, online platforms, and guidelines. At SDSU, we realize the importance of the relationship between Mentors and Induction Candidates. Therefore, these relationships are matched according to credentials held, grade level and/or subject area, as required by CTC. All our mentors have at least three years of classroom teaching experience, a clear credential, a master’s degree, and have been referred to our program by a peer in the field. Through the interview process, mentors must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, strong knowledge of the CSTPs, and mentoring experiences related to new teachers’ needs. Candidates are required to work with a mentor, on a weekly basis, throughout induction. The Induction Program must identify and assign a mentor to each participating teacher within the first 30 days of the candidate’s enrollment in the program.
Candidates should plan to work with a mentor, recommended staff member, or recommended resource for an average of no less than one hour per week. This hour may include (but is not limited to) ILP development, individualized mentoring, video observations, research discussions, and lesson or classroom feedback. Ideally, Mentors and Induction Candidates are assigned to one another for the entire Induction Program. However, if there is a conflict of interest on either side, candidates and mentors can be reassigned to promote optimal success.
