SDSU has two Multiple Subject and two Single Subject programs: One for mono-lingual candidates offered by the School of Teacher Education (STE), and another for bilingual candidates offered by the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education (DLE). These programs run independently; the courses for the bilingual program embed the bilingual added authorization standards and many are taught in both English and Spanish.
The Imperial Valley Campus (IVC) offers the mono-lingual program and has additional course requirements for those candidates wishing to add the bilingual added authorization. IVC is the only department who currently offers an Internship option. Intern Candidates take all of the same coursework, they received their intern credential when they reach the student teaching portion on the program and they then fulfill the internship requirements rather than the student teaching requirements.
For the Multiple Subject and Single Subject programs, there are specific courses that all candidates take; however, not all cohorts take the same classes at the same time. One cohort, for example, may have educational psychology in the fall and another cohort takes this class in the spring. Typically, the same instructor teaches both sections; this is really a staffing issue.

The Imperial Valley Campus regularly has interns due to district needs. These candidates take the same courses as all other credential candidates, most candidates receive their intern credential when they are ready for student teaching. At that point, they begin their internship and receive intern support rather than completing a traditional student teaching placement. The checklist below is used to ensure that interns meet all of the required standards.
At the San Diego Campus, there have been only two interns for the 2017-18 academic year. This is extremely rare and must be requested by the district. Students follow the normal sequence for the Single Subject program, have a field supervisor, and a district support provider on campus. Shifting from student teacher to intern means that the student is paid – normally in a high need, difficult to staff position.
