A community that comes together is like a bundle of sticks, each stick is fragile on its own, but when bound together they create an unbreakable force. That is exactly what happened in the 70’s in San Diego, CA. The Barrio Logan neighborhood was promised the land underneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to establish a park. However, in 1969, the city announced that the same space would be built into a California Highway Patrol substation. The community came together, and after months of peaceful protest, they were able to obtain the land on April 22, 1970. Chicano Park is now a place of pride and resistance for the Mexican-American community. Not only that, but it also represents the history, struggles, and culture of Chicanos. The Chicano Park Takeover is celebrated every year with an annual celebration on April 22nd, or the closest saturday. The community comes together to enjoy live music, performances, food, art, and various vendors.
