Our Story
The Academic Learning Center was created in January 2020. The Center was comprised of seven tutors. In March 2020, the center was forced to transition quickly and efficiently into online tutoring. Since then, the ALC has been operating as both online and in-person tutoring. The center has also seen a growth in hire of tutors with the average of 15 tutors per academic year.

When asked how would students rate their session, 87.68% stated "excellent," with 207 students stating they would return to the center.

Get Help On the Following Topics:
We provide one-on-one appointments with mentors that meet every other week to discuss academic or social goals.
Step 1-Apply to the program in Fall or Spring semester. Email is sent out the final month of the semester to all SDSU students.
Step 2- Participating in a meet-and-greet event with the mentors the week before the start of the semester.
Step 3- Mentoring coaches select their mentees. Contact with students begins the second week of class.
Step 4-The third week of the semester, students have the first appointment with a mentor.
We provide one-on-one tutoring that is course specific. Meetings are scheduled by appointment or walk-ins. Tutoring is between 30minutes or 1 hour.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Expectations of the session:
Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes or an hour.
If you are late by 10 minutes or more, appointment can be given to another student on the waitlist. If you are late, no extra time will be added to your appointment.
What to Bring:
Bring your work, such as assignments, project, notes, or textbooks that needs to be reviewed or covered.
The assignment prompts such as your syllabi, grading rubrics, or notes.
Tips:
Schedule your appointment with enough time in advance. Though walk-ins are welcomed, however, after Spring Break the Tutoring Center is packed! We will work with your needs, but please understand that we must keep to our schedule in order to cater to our appointments.
If the tutor has no appointment scheduled, you can have a walk-in appointment. However, this does not apply to proof reading essays or assignments.

Workshop weeks are in September and October for Fall schedule and February and March for Spring schedule. One week will be dedicated to in-person workshops and the following week will be dedicated to online workshops. All workshops are recorded and posted on the ALC Canvas homeroom page. These workshops will be held in Spanish or English.
Informative Workshops: These workshops are designed to inform students of critical information in understanding topics and subjects surrounding their academic betterment. in other words, you are lecturing information to the student. The tutor is the lecturer and the student is the listener.
Interactive Workshops: These workshops are designed for the student to better develop skills, topics, and subjects surrounding their academic betterment. In other words, students are actively participating in the development of the information. The student is the developer of the information and the tutor is the guide on the development.

General Questions:
What services do you offer?
We can assist you with a wide range of tutoring, from class assignments to studying for tests. One-on-one sessions are provided by peer tutors through pre-arranged appointments. The center also conducts workshops for academic success. All services are free of charge and to all SDSU-IV students.
Are you open during finals week?
No. Our tutors are also students and need to focus on their final exams as well. With that in mind, please schedule your tutoring session in a timely manner.
Are you open during summer session?
We hope that starting Summer 2024, we have some tutors available.
Tutoring Session Questions:
Can you give me proof that I went to my session?
Yes. We can send you a copy of the Tutoring Session Report once the tutor completes it. A copy of the report can be emailed to you, as well as, your instructor.
Can I do a walk-in appointment?
Walk-ins are welcomed when an immediate session is available. If we do have an opening, you can see a tutor right away. Ask a tutor for further help.
How do I cancell an appointment?
You can do this yourself by clicking on your appointment slot; a pop-up window will then appear, and you can click on the “Cancel This Appointment” box at the bottom.
Can I do back-to-back appointments?
Back-to-back appointments are allowed when you want a full hour appointment with a tutor. In most cases, most tutoring session do not last more than 30 minutes.
Do I have to see the same tutor each time?
It’s whatever you prefer. When you set up your appointment you can select the tutor you wish to work with, as long as it works for your and the tutor’s schedule.
Do I have to bring a complete draft?
It depends. If you want a tutor to proofread, then yes, that would be beneficial. If you are still developing your ideas and need guidance, then a full draft is not needed.
Does my tutor need a hardcopy of the information or can they read it off my laptop?
We prefer the hardcopy. It makes the session run smoother.
Can you help me with take-home exams/quizzes?
If you have a prompt from the instructor stating you are allowed to use outside resources, then we can help.
Can I leave an assignment and come back later for comments?
No. You must be present at all time during the tutoring session.
Can I email you my paper for comments?
Unless you are using eTutoring as a resource to get comments on your paper, then no.
Can you look at someone else’s assignment/work if I bring it?
No, the individual needs to set up an appointment and come in to the session.

Where are the workshops held?
Workshops are held in a variety of rooms at SDSU-IV.
How do I register for a workshop?
Starting Fall 2023, you can register for workshops through https://sdsu.mywconline.net.
If you are interested in becoming a coach for the ALC, the requirements are:
A 3.0 or higher SDSU cumulative GPA.
High grades (B+ or above) in the area you wish to tutor.
An unofficial transcript
Two Letter's of Recommendation or Reference from an SDSU instructor, and one from another professional.
Be enrolled in at least 6 units of classes.
Student must have been a student for a minimum of one semester.
Applications are filled out via-google forms.
The application process begins in May. Interview process is held in June and training begins in August.
Work-study eligibility not needed in order to apply.
