South Carolina & U.S. History
Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies!
In this course, we will explore the rich and complex history of South Carolina within the larger story of the United States. Beginning with the early settlement and colonial period, we will examine how South Carolina grew as a British colony and played a key role in shaping our nation's founding, from the American Revolution to the Constitutional Convention.
We will dive into the causes and consequences of the Civil War, including South Carolina's leadership in secession and the impact of Reconstruction. We will explore how industrialization, agriculture, and new technologies transformed both the state and the country. As we move through the 20th century, students will learn about South Carolina's contributions to defense, economic growth, and the Civil Rights Movement.
By the end of the year, students will have a deeper understanding of how historical events, decisions, and people continue to influence the world we live in today, both locally and nationally. This course emphasizes critical thinking, primary source analysis, and respectful discussions to prepare students to become informed and active citizens in our community, and in society as a whole.
