What's the Purpose?
Setting a purpose to why you choose a book can help keep students accountable for their actions. Setting a purpose keeps them motivated, engaged, and focused in the text.
Underline Words They Don't Know How to Spell
While your child writes, have them put a line under a word that has unknown spelling. This strategy allows them to continue on with their work without getting stuck on spelling a word. Then when they are done with the assignment they can reflect with an adult on their spelling.

When Reading, Have Students Write Words They Have Difficulties With On a Piece of Paper.
This strategy is similar to the one on the left. This way while a child is reading, they are being mindful of words they do not know. In writing the words down, they can move on and continue reading the book. After they are done reading, reflect on the words that they have missed.
