6th Grade ELA Independent Reading Expectations
Independent Reading and Projects are assessment grades
Why should you/your child read?
Studies have proved time and time again that independent reading increases fluency, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary.
If a student reads 20 - 30 minutes a day (including reading in class and study hall, which happens daily), they should be reading between 15-20 pages a day on average. That is a minimum of 75 to 100 pages a week.
How do I keep track of my independent reading?
When you finish a book, you line up for a 1 minute book talk/ conference during silent reading time with me and receive stickers for that book. You need to bring the book in for the conference. The “Reading Record” conference sheet is the official record of books.
How many pages do I have to read to get a sticker?
125 pages! Extra pages carry over towards the next sticker. All pages are cumulative. All pages count. For example: If one book is 100 pages and another book is 150 pages together they get 2 stickers because every page adds to the next to meet the goal.
How many stickers should I have by the end of each quarter?
Each student should have a minimum of 5 stickers by the end of 1st quarter on October 27th.
10 stickers by the end of the second quarter, which is January 19th.
15 by March 25.
20 by May 24.
**All books count from graphic novels to poetry. You can read books from my class library, another teacher’s library, school library, home, public Library or even borrowed from a friend (Just no magazines please)
**graphic novels count as 50% of a page since they have many illustrations and less words.
** books we read together in class always count towards your stickers and pages.
What should I expect during private book talks?
During the 1-2 minute book conference, students should be prepared to answer questions about characters, setting, make connections, identify problems, solutions, conflicts, antagonists and protagonists. For informative texts, students should be able to share facts, cause and effect, description, and sequence of events.
What else do I need to do?
All students must post a 1 minute book talk/review to Flipgrid for quarter 1 & 2. Book talk should include Title, Author, Genre, a brief summary, what you liked and didn't like about the book, and your rating out of 5 stars. For quarters 3 & 4 students have a choice to do a flip grid or create a visual book cover/report of their book to post around school. There are specific rubrics for both projects.
