Mrs. Miller - 7th Grade Math
WELCOME TO MY
“THINKING CLASSROOM”
Where students take ownership of their own learning!
HARD SKILLS vs. SOFT SKILLS
Hard skills are teachable and learnable technical skills. The hard skills needed for your future will depend on your career path. Soft skills are interpersonal skills that cannot be taught on the job and are highly valued by companies when it comes to hiring employees. According to LinkedIn, the top 5 soft skills employers are looking for are leadership, communication, problem-solving, work ethic, and teamwork. We will be developing each of these skills through our class structure, focusing on becoming ”thinking mathematicians”.
This is going to be an exciting year as I challenge students to use their PROBLEM-SOLVING and COMMUNICATION skills to develop many new MATHEMATICAL skills.
What you will see…
Students working in visibly random groups at vertical dry-erase boards.
Students getting stuck…experimenting, trying, failing, and applying their knowledge to get unstuck.
Students doing extra practice problems in class and on their own time, seeing over time that there is a connection between practice and mastery.
Students taking their own notes to remind their future selves what they will need to know.
Students explaining their thinking or reasoning (both verbally & written) to enhance their communication skills.
Teacher supporting and encouraging student thinking and empowering students to be confident in their mathematical knowledge.
Teacher encouraging knowledge mobility to support peers learning together and from each other.
Teacher answering student questions with thinking questions to guide student to finding the answer on their own.
It's OK not to know, it's NOT OK not to try!
