FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM focuses on building a love of learning and literature. We explores the purpose of libraries and study favorite authors including Mo Willems. We focus on basic literacy skills such as the parts of a book and the differences between fiction and nonfiction. We read fairytales and participate in the Illinois Monarch awards. We also practice our online research skills and learn how to stay safe online.
IN SECOND GRADE, we continue to build our literacy skills in the library. We learn more about library organization and begin to find books independently. We take a deep dive into folktales and practice our online research skills. We vote in the Illinois Monarch awards and study our favorite authors. In addition, we continue to learn how to stay safe online.
IN THIRD GRADE, we continue to grow our love of reading, while also integrating more technology into our curriculum. We dive into library organization, study perspectives through fairy tales, and vote in the Illinois Monarch awards. We also study digital citizenship and how to be safe online, learn coding with robots, and hone our online research skills.
In FOURTH GRADE, we further grow our multi-literacy skills. We study digital citizenship and fake news, and continue learning to code robots. We also complete a research project, vote in the Illinois Bluestem awards, and do a deep dive into different genres and library organization.
IN FIFTH GRADE, we use all the skills gained in Middleton library to be leaders and skilled readers. We do research, use green screen technology to bring our learning to life, and code robots. We deep dive into library organization, vote in the Illinois Bluestem awards, and create our own graphic novels. We further practice safe and kind digital citizenship as we get ready for Middle School.
