Moon of the Shaker of the Leaves. In the W̱ESELÁNEW̱ moon, fishing could be done mostly in the safety of our local waters. This is the time that big winds come and change the season to Winter.
Weather - The days become cooler. Travelling in our food gathering territory is now very limited. The winds that come with this moon are a signal to move to the Winter village as the open sea becomes dangerous for travelling.
Economic Activities - Most foods were now in storage for the Winter and fishing was done only close to village sites.
Some of our people formed hunting parties and moved West and into the mountains to hunt Elk. Elk were only hunted after the first snowfall as it was easier to track an elk if it was wounded. This way no meat would be wasted.
Cultural Activities - Winter fires are lit and this is the beginning of our Winter gatherings.
Below is an example of fishing techniques used by the W̱SÁNEĆ throughout history and is being revitalized today. These techniques weren't only used during this moon but throughout the fishing season.
Below is a clip of Sarah Jim explaining her art piece that incorporates reef net fishing and the 13 moons we're learning about. Not only is she an amazing artist, she's also an NSMS grad!
