Decimals on Blooket

We raced against each other to make it to the finish line, figuring out decimal questions as we go.

Decimal Work:

May 17, 2022

Students are looking at grocery store flyers, finding decimals and will be adding and subtracting them as we learn about decimals. They also have been playing games based on fractions, decimals, and place value.

Fraction Baking

May 3, 2022

Last week, the grade 4s had to divide their Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe in half. Today, they got to put their fraction skills into practice by making chocolate chip cookies.

Thinking Classrooms

April 27, 2022

For most of the year, we have been working on Building Thinking Classrooms. And it is paying off. The students work so well in groups and come up with such fascinating ways to solve the problems they are given. Today, they were asked to share 3 pizzas with 4 people. We are working on fractions, and each group came up with such amazing ideas. It is amazing to see their progress and to have them explain their thinking to the class.

Fractions

April 26, 2022

We are learning about Fractions in Grade 4 Math. Today, the students had to take a recipe and divide everything in half. This will be the recipe they make on Friday.

Keeping up our Multiplication Skills

March 3, 2022

Students have been learning about Division this week, but division is so reliant on students knowing their multiplication facts. Today, after working on Division, we played 'War' using cards where the students each drew 2 cards and the person with the largest product got to keep all the cards.

Basic Multiplication Facts

February 24, 2022

Every week, the students are given 10 minutes to complete as many basic multiplication facts as they can. Their goal is to complete more, accurately, than the week before. Every student has made amazing progress!

We're Almost Finished our Unit on Multiplication

February 17, 2022

Students worked in groups and used 3 different methods for answering a multiplication question. As a group of 2-3, they chould choose a beginner, intermediate, or advanced question, and could use any three of the four methods we've learned so far. Next week, we will learn about the algorithm and then we will be moving onto division.

Multiplication Games

February 8, 2022

We continue to work on our multiplication facts. Today, we played a quick game where students worked in groups to fill the entire wheel of facts. After, we learned about partial products, a method of doing multiplication similar to the Box Method- but without boxes!

Students should continue to practice their multiplication facts every evening for at least 10 minutes.

Box Method/ Area Model

February 3, 2022

We've been working on learning how to multiply larger numbers. This week, we learned the Box Method/Area Model. Students show their learning in different ways. Today, we worked on the vertical surfaces (whiteboards and windows), sorting word problems and box methods, and doing work on paper. The students have really shown a good understanding in their multiplication knowledge.

Multiplication Fun

February 2, 2022

While we may be learning how to multiply larger numbers, students keep up their multiplication facts using games using multiplication games.

In grade 4 math this week, we are learning the box method/area model way of multiplying numbers.

Thinking Classrooms

February 1, 2022

Today, we used our vertical surfaces while working in random groups, to figure out a math problem. We had 5 flavours of icecream and we wanted to make 2 scoop icecream cones. If we weren't able to replicate a combination, how many different people could we serve? The students used many different methods to figure out that there were 15 different combinations we could make. As an extension, the students tried to figure out how many people they could serve if they had 10 flavours (answer:55).
