Assessment & Reporting

The Proficiency Scale

The proficiency scale is being used province-wide to assess and report on student achievement in relation to the learning standards in the redesigned curriculum.

The value in using the proficiency scale is that it places emphasis on descriptive feedback and facilitates self-assessment - key practices for extending student learning.

The proficiency scale moves the conversation away from grades to a focus on student learning.

  • Is a student proficient in a set of concepts or competencies? In other words, do they demonstrate a solid understanding of those concepts and competencies?

  • What are the strengths found in the student’s work?

  • What are the next steps the student needs to become proficient or to challenge themselves further?

At the beginning of a new year, it would be expected that students would be just beginning their learning journey through a new curriculum. Throughout the year, the goal is to continue to develop and refine their skills and understanding as they work to become proficient in any given area of their learning.
