Math Extensions: Place Value and Number
Mastering multiplication facts is essential for success in math in middle school and beyond. Having a variety of strategies to figure out unknown facts helps students build understanding, while quick recall allows them to focus on more complex concepts—like fractions, ratios, algebra, and problem-solving—without getting stuck on basic calculations. Strong multiplication skills build confidence and reduce frustration in math and across subjects that use math, including science and technology.
Tips for home practice:
Consistency is key: make practice part of your daily routine and aim for 5-7 days per week.
Make sessions short: 10-15 minutes consistently leads to the best results. It is doable and leads to greater retention.
Stay focused: trying to learn all of the facts at the same time is not effective. Work on one fact or group of facts at a time. Once mastery is achieved, move on to the next fact.
Order matters: research has shown that using strategies that build on known facts is more effective than progressing from 0 through 10. The recommended order is:
Level 1: 2, 10, 5, 0/1
Level 2: "squares," 4, 3, 9
Level 3: 6, 7, 8, Beyond 10
Make it fun!: "drill & kill" can make learning unpleasant and lead to conflict and frustration. Instead, try games (face-to-face and/or online) and other activities that are fun and build understanding and confidence. Check out the recommended resources list to get started.
