PHYSICAL HEALTH EDUCATION OVERVIEW
The Physical Health Education program at Claremont Secondary School strives to meet the individual needs and interests of students as they work towards understanding and developing their physical, social, emotional and mental well-being. PHE courses are designed to strengthen students’ interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships and to promote a positive attitude towards living a lifelong, active, and healthy lifestyle. In a safe and fun environment, PHE courses will enhance students' knowledge, skills and attitudes involved in maintaining an optimal level of physical fitness and making healthy choices. Student’s will expand their knowledge and understanding of the interconnected factors between physical activity and socioemotional well-being. PHE 9 and PHE 10 are compulsory courses for all students.
PHYSICAL HEALTH EDUCATION 9
At Claremont, PHE students learn about their physical, emotional, and mental health with the goal of building lifelong participation in physical activity. The key concepts of change, communication, development, and relationships will be explored within new contexts. In PHE 9, students will continue to create personal wellness goals, build fitness plans, and reflect on their performance. Students will continue to develop physical literacy through a variety of activities and discussions. Health topics include: nutrition, healthy relationships, drinking, smoking and substance use, cyberbullying and mental health.
PHYSICAL HEALTH EDUCATION 10
PHE10 students learn about the importance of healthy living through an emphasis on daily participation, physical fitness and the development of motor skills. The key concept of how healthy choices are influenced by our physical, emotional, and mental well-being will be explored within new contexts. In PHE 10, students will continue to create personal fitness goals, build wellness plans, and reflect on their performance. Understanding one’s overall health and well-being will also be explored through the context of physical literacy from a variety of physical activities, both individually and in smaller groups. Health topics include: social media use, CPR, sexual health, and the continuation of mental health conversations.
COMMUNITY RECREATION 11 & 12
Communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal development, and relationships are explored through sport and recreational activities both within the school and in the community through a multitude of field trips that emphasize experiential learning instead of skill development (ex. Beach Volleyball, Climbing, Skating, Hot Yoga, CrossFit, Bootcamps, Billiards, Golf, Laser Tag, Curling, etc.). The students will also develop their leadership skills through activities such as peer teaching, team play, journal reflection and inquiry-based projects.
Important Notes: CR11 students may earn Level 1 First Aid and CR12 students may participate in a multi-day outdoor camping/canoeing trip to the Sayward Lakes Canoe Route. A small fee is required to cover the costs associated with transportation, reservations, fuel, guest instructors, facility use etc.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS 11
This course will focus on experiential learning to develop an understanding of the natural environment as well as the personal and collaborative skills necessary to complete an independent, safe and environmentally aware wilderness trip. Course topics will include; wilderness safety/survival skills, canoeing/portaging, first aid, nutrition, cooking on backpacking stoves, navigation, environmental practices/nature appreciation, team building, goal setting, leadership and personal fitness, and Boat Pro-certification.
Important Notes: There is a fee for this course of $125.00, which covers course materials and an overnight/two night camping trip on the Juan de Fuca Trail or other suitable location. Those wishing to participate on the West Coast Trail will be required to pay an additional fee of approx. $350.00 to cover the cost of trail permits, transportation, parking, TOC, and ferries.
PHYSICAL HEALTH EDUCATION STUDENT ASSISTANT 11/12
This is a participatory course that prepares and motivates students to develop leadership and communication skills through the assistance of junior PHE classes. The student teacher-assistant will work under the supervision of a certified PHE teacher and will provide assistance to the teacher, individuals and/or small groups in a variety of learning activities. Students will develop skills in organization, self-directedness, communication, interpersonal relationships, leadership, decision-making, and teamwork. The aim for PHE student assistants is to enhance their understanding of the processes needed to coordinate activities, manage junior students and equipment, as well as learn the importance of mentorship of others and lifelong learning.
Important Notes: Applicants must be approved by the PHE Department.
FITNESS AND CONDITIONING 11/12 Yearlong (AM)
This course is intended for students wanting to improve their overall fitness and develop a lifestyle that will target peak performance, healthy living, and gain confidence. Students will develop and demonstrate appropriate exercise techniques for a variety of fitness activities, and create, implement, and reflect on a personalized fitness program. Students will participate weekly in physical and mental activities, utilizing a variety of exercise principles designed to enhance and maintain health components of fitness.
Claremont Sports Institute (CSI) Academies and
Sport Performance Programs
The Claremont Sports Institute (CSI) features a number of sport specific programs. Two different classifications of programs exist under the CSI umbrella. Academy programs are year-long and offer 8 credits per year. Sport Performance programs are offered in only one semester, earning students 4 credits per year.
ACADEMY PROGRAMS - General Information:
Students accepted and enrolled in the CSI academy programs will focus on skill development within their sport. In grades 11 and 12 there is greater emphasis on post-secondary athletic and academic requirements, including: SAT preparation, scholarships and leadership. Students in their respective grade levels earn credit for PHE9, PHE10, PHE11, PHE12, Science of Sport and Training 9/10, Strength and Conditioning 11/12. Work ethic, commitment, personal and social awareness and responsibility are critical to success in these programs.
APPLICATIONS
All students wishing to apply and be considered for the CSI academy programs (Boys Lacrosse, Rowing, Aquatics and sport performance Golf) are asked to complete and submit an application package and submit to the school. Applications are available online at www.claremont.sd63.bc.ca. Applications must be completed in full at the time of submission.
Important Notes: Out of area students will be asked to submit a school application as well. Families should notify Claremont if they wish to still enroll at Claremont despite an unsuccessful application into an academy program.
This is a ‘Program of Choice’ and therefore full payment is required. A deposit will be required once the student has been accepted in the Claremont Sports Institute academy program.
For all new students applying to Claremont and wanting to take CSI Lacrosse, Rowing, Aquatics or Golf, all 3 of the following are needed in order to register for your Program of Choice:
1. CSI Sport Application with your Registration Package.
2. Claremont School Registration Package to the Claremont Office.
3. Course selection form to the Claremont Office.
Returning students must complete a Returning Student CSI Commitment Form and course selection form. This will be done in class with respective classes and teachers.

LACROSSE ACADEMY
Considered one of the elite high school lacrosse programs in North America, the CSI’s Lacrosse Academy is proud to offer a premier lacrosse experience with superior on-field coaching, and a wealth of competitive opportunities for players. This unique model allows players to take their game to the next level.
2020-2021 Fee is $1350 for new students and $1200 for returning students (this base cost does not include higher level Field Trips).
ROWING ACADEMY
The program aims at developing teamwork and individuals through daily training at school and Elk Lake (current home of the National Rowing Team), mixing on-water rowing with various dryland and cross-training activities. Athletes compete at all local school and club regattas throughout the year, along with select athletes racing at Nationals in Ontario. Outside of training, a variety of topics are covered such as sport science, fitness, nutrition, strength training, sport psychology, physiology, time-management, goal setting and leadership skills.
2020-2021 Fee is $2345 for new students and $2100 for returning (this base cost does not include higher level Field Trips).
AQUATICS ACADEMY
The CSI Aquatics Academy is a swimming program run in partnership with Island Swimming. It provides swimmers the opportunity to excel at both their academics and athletics in an environment which supports both. CSI Aquatics is run out of Saanich Commonwealth Pool.
2020-2021 Fee is $450 paid to the school (this base cost does not include the swimming fees paid to Island Swimming).
Important Notes: Students in year-long academy programs earn 4 credits per semester, for a total of 8 credits for the year.
4 of the credits are for grade specific Physical Health Education and the other 4 credits are for the grade specific elective course described below.
Science of Sport and Training 9 & 10 (Jr)
This course has been designed to enhance student athletes’ knowledge and understanding about the science of sport and training. Students wanting to improve their overall fitness and develop a lifestyle that will target the body for peak performance as well as maintain a healthy body for a lifetime will benefit from taking this course.

Sport Performance Programs
Basketball Sport Performance (BB10-12)
This course is open to students in grades 10-12 and will provide an opportunity to train and learn about the sport of basketball. Students should have a desire and love for the game. The course will provide an avenue for students to develop their basketball skills, leadership and character. It will be a ‘skills and drills’ focused class to enhance current basketball abilities and their overall health and well-being. Students will be on the court 2-3 days per week where they will have the opportunity to develop new skills and learn from several Guest Coaches in our local basketball community. Occasional classroom/theory days will be used to supplement on court training.
The course is designed to expose the student to a variety of physical and mental challenges in order to introduce game-like scenarios and ultimately the decision-making process of competitive athletics. As such, students will use the theories and principles they learn and apply them in individual and small group competitive situations.
Important Notes: This 4 credit “elective” class will NOT satisfy the student's PHE requirement. The course will be offered outside the school timetable held mainly in the mornings prior to the first block, but other sessions and opportunities will occur at varied times. A fee is required to offset the costs associated with equipment, clothing, field trips, travel, certifications and guest coaches.

Golf Sport Performance
The exciting and evolving golf program runs during semester 2 (February – June), as a 4 credit elective class. The students participate, practice and compete Monday through Friday. The class is designed to assist young golfers by providing innovative instruction from CPGA professionals off campus at local golf facilities (and on occasion, other golf courses within the CRD and up island).
Due to popularity and space limitations, this course requires students to complete the CSI application. This 4 credit “elective” class will NOT satisfy the student's physical health education requirement. For a more detailed class description, go to the Claremont CSI Golf Program Information Page
Important Notes: A fee is required to offset the costs associated with transportation, clothing, equipment, course usage and the CPGA Pros.

Rugby Sport Performance
This course is intended for those students (grades 9-12) with a strong desire to improve their skills and understanding of the sport of rugby. There is no experience required and all experience levels are welcome! Significant time each week will be spent on rugby specific skill development and fitness training. Instruction will take place during regular on field and weight room training sessions, video analysis, and with the assistance of various guest coaches. The focus of the course will be on the development/refinement of contact skills (tackling, rucking, mauling, scrummaging), passing/receiving, kicking/catching, evading and offensive and defensive tactics/strategies. All these areas will be coached with the emphasis on safety and technique. The class will regularly scrimmage and play games.
For students in grade 11 and 12, the course will feature weekly community recreation based field trips, such as curling, skating, bowling, tennis, archery, billiards, rock climbing, beach volleyball, canoeing, etc. Students in grades 9 and 10 will complete mini units in other traditional PHE activities. Additionally, all students will host clinics for younger schools and have opportunities to complete a variety of possible first aid/coaching/refereeing certifications.
Important Notes: The course will meet the Prescribed Learning Outcomes for PHE 9, 10, 11, and 12. Students may take the course multiple times if they choose, receiving a different credit each year. A fee is required to offset the costs associated with clothing, transportation, field trips, certifications and guest coaches.

Lacrosse (Girls) Sport Performance
This course is intended for those students with a strong desire to improve their skills and understanding of the sport of women's lacrosse. There is no experience required and all experience levels are welcome. Significant instructional time will be spent on the development of lacrosse specific skills, strategies, and tactics. This instruction will take place during regular on field training sessions, video analysis, and with the assistance of various guest coaches and all done within the timetable as a regular class like all other classes. Given the nature of the class, it is likely that many skills and concepts will be placed within the context of 7-A-Side lacrosse building to full field competition. Students will have opportunities to play games with local, mainland and US teams.
Important Notes: Upon completion, students will satisfy their junior PHE credit. New Students course fee is $250 plus costs for equipment as needed. Returning Students course fee is $250.
