Once we have established the routine and expectations around our writing journals, we have experimented with different ways of enjoying our reflection time. This has sometimes included calming music playlists, practicing mindfulness before our writing sessions, or even taking our writing journals outside. Here are some other simple tools I have used for setting the mood during our writing journal time.
Using a sensory timer encourages students to stay on task while reminding them that this activity is not going to go on forever. I have also found that many classes enjoy perusing the timer options, and they prefer these calming visuals to a stopwatch.
My students have enjoyed mixing up the learning space with mood setters like a virtual fireplace, snowfall, or riverside noises. Of course it's also great to do our writing journals outside from time to time, but this is a great alternative when getting outside is not possible.
